Sourav Ganguly has voiced his concerns over Rohit Sharma’s recent Test performances, expressing surprise at the Indian captain’s form in red-ball cricket over the last four to five years. Despite being one of the finest batters of his generation, Rohit has struggled to replicate his white-ball dominance in Tests, particularly in challenging overseas conditions.

India endured a tough run in the longest format over the past few months, managing just three wins in ten Tests against Bangladesh, New Zealand, and Australia. Sourav Ganguly believes that Rohit, given his stature and ability, should be performing at a much higher level in Test cricket.

“What has surprised me is his form in red-ball cricket over the last 4-5 years. A player of his ability can do much better. He must put on his thinking cap because we have five Tests against England coming up, and that will be another hard series,” Sourav Ganguly said in an interview with RevSportz.

He also pointed out the challenges of playing in England, emphasizing that conditions will test Rohit’s technique. “Just like in Australia, it’s going to seam, it’s going to swing. India needs him to step up in Tests, but in white-ball cricket, he is one of the greatest ever,” Ganguly added.

Rohit’s captaincy stocks received a significant boost after leading India to a Champions Trophy win. However, reports suggest that the selection committee, headed by Ajit Agarkar, has not yet confirmed him as the automatic choice to lead India in the five-Test series against England starting June 20.

One of the key concerns is the absence of a clear leadership alternative. Jasprit Bumrah’s fitness remains a point of worry, and no young player has emerged as a strong Test captaincy candidate yet.

Rohit was under pressure following India’s 1-3 series defeat to Australia, which only magnified his inconsistent form. While the Champions Trophy triumph has given him some breathing room, the selectors now face a tough decision—whether his ODI success should influence his Test captaincy, especially when his returns in England have been modest, with just one century in seven Tests at an average of 40.3.
