The Indian cricket team has already sealed the ongoing 5-match ODI series against New Zealand in the first three matches itself. The Indian skipper Virat Kohli has decided to have some rest from the tour and the selectors haven’t named the replacement for him. There are certain chances that the young Shubman Gill getting a game in place of Kohli and the former Indian cricketer Sourav Ganguly also reckons that the youngster should get a chance.
Kohli also rated him highly after the third ODI in the post-match presentation saying that the talent Gill possesses at the age of 19 is immense and even he himself didn’t bat like that during that stage of his life. This comment has more or less assured the youngster like Shubman an ODI debut in one of the two ODIs against New Zealand.
After the game, Virat said, “I saw him bat in the nets and I was like wow I was not even ten percent of that when I was 19.”

Meanwhile, former Indian skipper, Sourav Ganguly has also come in support of Shubman Gill’s inclusion in the team for the remainder of the series and feels that the youngster should get a chance in the national squad ahead of the World Cup. The selectors have also clarified that they are looking at him as a reserve opener for the mega event and a good performance would definitely seal his place. However, earlier, KL Rahul was included in the team as a backup opener all this while but his miserable form has opened up a place for Gill.
As per the quotes in India Today, Ganguly said, “I think they should play Shubman Gill. He certainly deserves a chance in the team. He should play the rest of the series. Who knows, India might get another good player for the World Cup. Virat Kohli has also said that he didn’t bat like Gill when he was his age, which is a great thing to say for a captain.”

With Rohit Sharma has taken the captaincy reins, it remains to be seen if Gill will get a chance and who will be left out for him at the Seddon Park in Hamilton where the next match is set to be played.
