Former India captain Sourav Ganguly has filed a police complaint at Thakurpukur Police Station over allegedly defamatory content circulating on social media. The complaint names an unofficial Facebook page, “Sourav Ganguly Fans,” and also refers to the media platform Sportzwiki. According to India Today, a post falsely claimed that the Enforcement Directorate had raided Ganguly’s residence.

The former India skipper has firmly denied the claim, calling it completely false and misleading. Ganguly has stated that such fabricated content is being spread with the clear intention of damaging his reputation. The complaint was lodged on June 15, and police authorities have reportedly begun investigating the matter.

The case once again highlights how quickly false information can spread online, especially when it involves high-profile public figures such as former cricketers. Sourav Ganguly is not the first Indian cricket legend to face this problem. In 2023, Sachin Tendulkar was targeted after his name, image and voice were allegedly misused in fake online advertisements and posts.

Sachin Tendulkar then approached the Mumbai Police Crime Branch against unidentified individuals who used his identity to mislead social media users and potentially defraud them online. Following his complaint, the Mumbai Police Cyber Cell registered a case under sections 420, 465 and 500 of the Indian Penal Code and began an investigation.

Sunil Gavaskar has also taken a strong stand against the misuse of his identity online. Over the years, the batting great has repeatedly taken action against fake posts, fabricated quotes, and defamatory content circulated in his name without his consent.

Reports from Delhi High Court proceedings also stated that Gavaskar sought protection of his personality rights, arguing that several platforms were wrongly using his name and image. The court reportedly directed platforms such as Google, Meta and X, formerly Twitter, to remove infringing content within strict timelines.

These incidents show how even cricketing icons continue to battle misinformation in the digital era, with legal action becoming an important step to protect reputation, identity and public trust.
