The grisly manner of the crime has moved massive public demonstrations and outpouring of grief and anger on social media. Thousands of people are changing their profile pictures on social media to black, showing an act of mourning and in solidarity with the demand for justice. Ganguly joined it by changing his profile picture on platform X (formerly Twitter) to black, in a gesture supporting this cause.

According to reports in the Times of India, Ganguly and his wife, Dona, will join the protests in front of junior resident doctors to show solidarity with the medical community and people’s demand for justice. Ganguly’s joining comes much after he became a part of the controversy over his comments related to the incident.

First, he called it a “stray” incident; then there was massive outrage on social media because it was perceived to be trivializing the tragedy. Amidst the criticism, Ganguly clarified that his stand is one of deep regret over the crime and the need for strong action.

“I don’t know how what I said last Sunday was construed or interpreted. I have said earlier as well that it is a terrible thing. Now the CBI and the police are investigating the matter. It’s very shameful what has happened,” Ganguly explained, as quoted by TOI. He also added that severe punishment should be awarded to the culprits, believing that such a punishment should work as a strong deterrent in order to prevent the recurrence of similar crimes in the future. “The punishment should be such that no one dares to commit such a crime again in their life. That is important. Punishment has to be severe,” he added.

A task force has been set up to recommend safety measures for doctors on duty, and the CBI has been asked to provide a status report on the probe.
