Former Indian skipper, Sourav Ganguly refused to be drawn into the fan debate of Sachin Tendulkar vs Virat Kohli but decided to praise the batter after his 45th ODI ton against Sri Lanka in the first ODI. Kohli is well on the verge of breaking Tendulkar’s record for most centuries and took one step closer after playing an impressive 113 in Guwahati on 10th December.

The 34-year-old ended his 2022 campaign with a century against Bangladesh and has now kickstarted 2023 with another brilliant performance with the bat. During a promotional event, as quoted by PTI, Ganguly was asked a question about the Tendulkar vs Kohli debate. However, the former BCCI President decided not to fall for the debate and said it was a difficult question.

As per the quotes in India Today, Sourav Ganguly said, “It’s a difficult question to answer. Kohli is a fantastic player. He’s played many such innings, 45 hundreds don’t happen like this. He’s a special talent. There will be periods when he will not score, but he’s a special player.”

Former Indian opener, Gautam Gambhir also commented on Kohli after his century and tipped the star batter to go past Tendulkar’s record in the ODIs.

During a chat on Star Sports, Gautam Gambhir said, “It’s not about the record, honestly. Virat Kohli will go on to get many more centuries than Sachin Tendulkar in the 50-overs format. See, the rules have changed. You should not compare eras. It’s not fair to compare eras as well where there was one new ball as compared to now when there are 2 new balls with five fielders inside. But yes, he has been a master in this format and shown it over such a long period.”
