Former India skipper Sourav Ganguly has said he is surprised that one simple tweet led everyone to believe that he is stepping down as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president. On Wednesday, the southpaw posted a thank you note on his social media handles in which he had mentioned that he is set to start something new that will be helpful to a lot of people.
Soon after the post was published, a lot of people of social media started speculating that he is preparing to enter politics, and therefore, could be stepping down as the president of the BCCI. Later in the day, Ganguly made it crystal clear that he would be continuing as the BCCI president, and the tweet was regarding his new business venture, a newly-launched global education app.

Talking about this during a chat with Hindustan Times, Sourav Ganguly said, “I have launched a new education app worldwide. It’s an educational app launched worldwide. I was surprised (with the speculations). It was a simple tweet, there is no mention of resignation, nothing.”

The speculations regarding Ganguly’s tweet blew out of proportion to such an extent that BCCI secretary Jay Shah had to clarify that the former Indian skipper is not leaving the BCCI office. The reason that could have led fans to believe that Ganguly might be joining politics was a meeting with the Home Minister Amit Shah at his Kolkata residence recently.

While speculations of Sourav Ganguly have existed ever since 2021 during the West Bengal Assembly elections, they grew when the BCCI President hosted Amit Shah and several other BJP leaders at his residence for dinner on May 10. During the Home Minister’s recent visit to West Bengal, Ganguly hosted the honorary minister. With the 49-year-old already having close ties with Amit Shah’s son, Jay Shah, during their time at the BCCI, it seemed within the realm of possibility that Ganguly would make the transition..
