Former Sri Lanka Test cricketer Avishka Gunawardene has been cleared of match-fixing charges by an independent tribunal, International Cricket Council (ICC) has announced Monday. The independent anti-corruption tribunal has also dismissed three out of four charges which were made against another former player of Sri Lanka, Nuwan Zoysa, who last month was banned from the game for six years as well.

Both the cricketers were accused of trying to fix matches in a T10 league in the United Arab Emirates in 2017 as well. However, an ICC statement has also stated that the tribunal had cleared Gunawardene, who had played six Tests and 61 ODIs for Sri Lanka. The board further added Gunawardene, who went on to become a Sri Lanka A coach later and he was also free to take up cricket activities once again.

However, Avishka Gunawardene had been accused of “facilitating” match-fixing and failing to disclose approaches to the ICC’s anti-corruption unit too. However, the ICC has decided not to make any other comment as well. Zoysa, who was a bowling coach after having played 30 Tests and 95 ODIs, was cleared of three out of the four charges as well, however, his six-year ban will continue as well, the ICC further stated also.

He, however, has been cleared from all the claims related to corruption, influencing others about fixing a match as well. On the other hand, last month, another former Sri Lanka pace bowler, Dilhara Lokuhettige, was banned for eight years for trying to fix the same T10 league played in 2017. Meanwhile, Sri Lanka introduced a law against match-fixing after two years in 2019 after the then-sports minister Harin Fernando has declared that the International Cricket Council has considered it the world’s most corrupt cricket nation as well.

It is also noteworthy that, former Sri Lanka captain Sanath Jayasuriya was also banned for two years in October 2018 for failing to cooperate with a match-fixing inquiry as well.
