A lot has been made of 34-year-old Cameron White’s selection in the one-day squad following Chris Lynn’s injury and subsequent withdrawal; however Australian all-rounder Marcus Stoinis credits a lot his own success to his former Victorian teammate.
Many were expecting Glenn Maxwell to find his way into the squad in spite of Steve Smith’s previous comments about his training, but Stoinis isn’t surprised about White’s inclusion.
White has scored 285 runs in six BBL07 games for the Melbourne Renegades while possessing a ridiculous average of 142.5, but Stoinis believes it is his mind that makes him one of the most feared limited overs batsmen in the world.
Stoinis said “He’s one of the smartest players in Australian cricket, international cricket. He took me under the wing seven years ago when he didn’t have to. As soon as I stepped into the Victorian change rooms, he helped show me the ropes.
“Six years ago, pre-season, he sent me a message every morning saying, ‘What are we doing this morning? Why are we doing it? What are you looking to get out of it?’ It’s no wonder why he is so good and I’m stoked for him to get back in one-day colours.”
England is coming into the one day series on the back of a 4-0 Ashes demolition, but Stoinis is expecting the tourists to play with freedom.
“Coming into this one-day series, it’s been a long tour for them, (but) foot on the throat,” Stoinis said.
“They are a good one day outfit. There isn’t much to lose from them after the Ashes, they’ll come out with a fresh sense of authority.”
The first of five one day matches against England begins on Sunday, January 14 at the MCG.
