Former England fast bowler and commentator Stuart Broad has expressed serious concerns about the current state of England’s white-ball cricket team following a narrow series defeat against South Africa at home. Broad pointed out a lack of energy and direction in the squad, highlighting that fatigue and inconsistent performances contributed significantly to England losing the series.

The second ODI at Lord’s on September 4 saw South Africa secure a thrilling five-run win, taking an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series. Despite brilliant half-centuries from Joe Root, Jacob Bethell, and Jos Buttler, England fell just short of the 331-run target, underscoring gaps in bowling and fielding.
Stuart Broad noted, “I always look at body language in the field and the bowlers, and it felt like a pretty flat bowling and fielding performance today compared to the energy that Tristan Stubbs and Dewald Brevis bring to the team. So, that’s a bit of a problem, which is why you’ve lost the series.”

Speaking to Sky Sports, Broad highlighted the absence of a clear strategy in England’s white-ball squad. He contrasted this with the clarity provided by Brendon McCullum to the Test team, which allowed players and management to back the plan fully.
“With the Test team, McCullum was very clear about what he wanted to achieve; even the press and we understood the goal, so we could fully back it. We haven’t really heard similar guidance for the white-ball group,” Suart Broad added.

South Africa’s triumph ended a 25-year wait for an ODI series win in England, having previously lost four bilateral series (2008, 2012, 2017, 2022). England, under Harry Brook, has now lost four consecutive ODIs to the Proteas and won just one of six bilateral ODI series since the 2023 World Cup, registering a win rate of 16.7%, the lowest among full-member nations.
A standout performer was Matthew Breetzke, who became the first player in ODI history to score five consecutive half-centuries from debut, contributing 85 off 77 balls in the second ODI. Nandre Burger’s three crucial wickets helped South Africa secure the slim five-run victory.

England will aim to finish the series on a high note in the final ODI at Southampton on September 7, looking for a consolation win to restore confidence ahead of future white-ball challenges. Broad’s critique emphasises that without a defined game plan and sharper energy, England’s white-ball ambitions may face continued hurdles.
