England pace legend Stuart Broad was full of praise for India’s Test captain Shubman Gill, who showcased tremendous composure and maturity on the opening day of the second Test at Edgbaston. Amidst early pressure and a probing England pace attack, Gill stood tall, guiding India through testing spells with poise and confidence.

Despite the early loss of KL Rahul and a few nervy moments, Gill absorbed the pressure with a calm head. He eased into his innings and brought up his half-century in style by dispatching a full delivery straight down the ground — a shot that oozed class. Stuart Broad, analysing the day’s play on Sky Sports, lauded Gill not only for his technical finesse but also for his temperament and leadership presence.
“It’s been very patient from Shubman Gill so far, and he’s got the look about him that he is here for the day,” Stuart Broad said. “A very calm nature, he looks like the sort of captain you’d like to play for. Doesn’t get too ruffled.”

Gill’s innings only grew in authority as the day progressed. Displaying patience and shot selection, he capitalised on England’s inexperienced bowling unit. A sweep off Joe Root and a composed push into the covers brought up a well-deserved century, which came off 199 balls.

“Wonderful. A proper Test innings,” Stuart Broad continued. “He’s worked extremely hard for his second century as captain in back-to-back Tests. He’s remained calm throughout, and his teammates clearly value every run he’s scored.”

Shubman Gill, who had already shown glimpses of form in the series opener, made this hundred even more significant by not just anchoring India’s innings but also establishing his credentials as a reliable leader. This century also marked his first outside Asia and seventh overall in Test cricket — a testament to his growing stature.
