England’s struggles in ODI cricket continued after a six-wicket defeat to India in the opening match of the three-match series at Edgbaston, prompting former fast bowler Stuart Broad to call for significant changes to the team’s balance. With the 2027 ODI World Cup in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia firmly on the horizon, Broad believes England must rethink their combination and give more opportunities to specialist fast bowlers instead of loading the side with spin options.

The defeat in Birmingham further highlighted England’s declining fortunes in the 50-over format. Once the dominant force that lifted the 2019 ODI World Cup, the Three Lions have slipped to eighth in the ICC ODI rankings and are in danger of losing their grip on an automatic qualification spot for the 2027 World Cup.

Speaking on Sky Sports Cricket, Broad questioned England’s current team composition, noting that the side fielded too many spin bowlers for conditions that traditionally favour pace. According to the former England pacer, the management should start building a bowling attack suited to the conditions expected in the next World Cup rather than persisting with an unbalanced combination.

“England are eighth in the world rankings and are playing like they are eighth,” Stuart Broad said. “They need to get more experience into defined roles. Looking ahead to the next World Cup in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia, it’s going to be the taller, quicker bowlers who make the biggest impact.”

England currently has specialist spinner Adil Rashid, left-arm spinner Liam Dawson and spin-bowling all-rounder Will Jacks in the XI, while Jacob Bethell and Joe Root also provide part-time spin. Broad believes sacrificing one spinner for an additional seamer would make England’s attack far more effective while also preparing the next generation of fast bowlers for major tournaments.

Broad also stressed the importance of having another genuine wicket-taking pace option during the middle overs. While Jofra Archer remains England’s premier white-ball bowler and Josh Tongue has shown promise, Broad feels the attack lacks a reliable first-change seamer capable of consistently breaking partnerships. Although Sam Curran adds balance with both bat and ball, Broad believes his strengths lie in the powerplay and death overs rather than operating through the middle phase of an innings.

England have received a timely boost with Brydon Carse returning to full fitness ahead of the second ODI in Cardiff. Broad believes Carse could be the ideal candidate to replace one of the spinners, while also naming Gus Atkinson and Saqib Mahmood as bowlers who deserve extended opportunities.

“Taking 10 wickets in an ODI isn’t easy, especially through the middle overs,” Stuart Broad explained. “Archer is a natural wicket-taker, Tongue can create chances and Rashid remains a proven match-winner. But England need another fast bowler who can bowl hard lengths, use the bouncer, find movement and create wickets without constantly relying on Archer. Whether that’s Brydon Carse, Gus Atkinson or Saqib Mahmood, England need to start giving them experience now.”

With England’s ODI form continuing to slide, Broad’s comments underline the urgency for the team management to identify a settled combination well before the 2027 World Cup qualification race intensifies.
