On Saturday evening, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) surprisingly called the young Indian opening batsman Subhman Gill in the national squad when the second and final Test of the series between India and Windies was running at Hyderabad. Though he hasn’t got any on-field opportunity, the 19-year-old Gill feels great after becoming a part of the Indian dressing room.
While Hanuma Vihari and Mohammed Siraj were released from the Indian Test squad to make them available for the Vijay Hazare Trophy, Subhman Gill and Manish Pandey replaced them. Initially, Gill thought it was prank call but soon realised the reality.
While they were added in the Test squad after the end of the day two of Hyderabad Test, it was finished on the very next day. However, Gill feels great after getting his maiden call-up in the national team.
He told Sportstar, “It is a great feeling. To be a part of the Indian dressing room itself is a big thing and I hope to learn a lot from the seniors.”
Gill was the Player of the Match award winner in the 2018 ICC U-19 Cricket World Cup in New Zealand, where India U-19 won the trophy under Prithvi Shaw’s captaincy. While Shaw made his international cricket debut during the first Test of the series, Gill also get his maiden call-up in the national team.
Gill is the big fan of the Indian captain Virat Kohli. The Punjab boy is looking forward to trying and learning a few things from Kohli.
Gill said on that, “He is my favourite cricketer and I really look up to him. I will try and learn a few things from him when I get to meet him. I am really looking forward to it.”
Gill believes this small journey with the national team will give him huge confidence before the beginning of the new Ranji Trophy season.
The Punjab cricketer said, “With the Ranji Trophy coming in, I want to deliver the goods for Punjab and play to my strength. These few days with the Indian team will certainly boost my confidence. I want to soak in every moment of it.”
