Sunil Gavaskar, the legendary Indian cricketer, has offered his insights on the recent resurgence of Virat Kohli, emphasizing the return of fortune that has accompanied his return to form. Kohli had endured a lean patch in international cricket, averaging less than 30 in Test matches over the past three years. However, the 34-year-old batsman kick-started his 2023 campaign with a remarkable performance, scoring his personal best of 186 against Australia during the final Test of the Border-Gavaskar trophy series.

Kohli’s stellar form positions him as a key player for India as they gear up for the highly anticipated World Test Championship (WTC) Final against Australia at The Oval. Notably, the Indian skipper boasts an impressive track record against the Australian team in Test matches. Across 24 encounters, Kohli has amassed 1979 runs at an average of 48.26, including eight centuries.

Speaking to Star Sports and quoted by Sportskeeda, Sunil Gavaskar acknowledged that once Kohli regained his form, luck also seemed to favor him once again, which had eluded him during his rough patch. Gavaskar pointed out instances where inside edges narrowly missed the stumps, catches were dropped, or fielders missed chances by a hair’s breadth. These strokes of fortune, which every batter relies on, seemed to have returned to Kohli following a barren period.

“Every player goes through things called bad patch or lean patch. So I think that was what was happening. Then later on once he started to get the runs, you would again have noticed that in the early stages, he was having a bit of luck.”

“The inside edges were going near the stumps but not hitting the stumps, the catches being dropped or the catches being just a little bit away from the fielder. So that little bit of luck that every batter needs, which had deserted him in that barren period, he has got it back,” said Sunil Gavaskar.

Gavaskar further expressed his lack of surprise at Kohli’s resurgence, citing the batsman’s exceptional temperament, hunger for runs, and technical prowess. Kohli’s strong mental resilience, unwavering determination, and solid technique have played significant roles in his success throughout his career.

The batting legend eleboarted, “Otherwise, he has got a wonderful temperament, he has got the hunger for runs, and technically also he is very good. So no wonder that he has been back among the runs.”
