Sunil Gavaskar recently shed light on the evolution of Virat Kohli’s T20 approach, highlighting a noticeable shift in his batting intent. Speaking from the JioHotstar dugout, the former Indian captain praised Kohli for showing a renewed hunger to take the attack to the bowlers from the very first ball — a trait not always associated with the classic stylist in the shortest format.

According to Sunil Gavaskar, Virat Kohli’s current mindset is a sharp contrast to the earlier phases of his T20 career, where he typically took his time to settle before launching into big shots.
“The most significant change in the past season and a half has been Virat’s willingness to play lofted shots early in the innings,” Sunil Gavaskar noted. “Now, instead of waiting to get set, he’s taking risks right from ball one, and it’s putting bowlers under immediate pressure.”

This new aggressive streak has caught opposition attacks off guard. “Bowlers expecting the usual drives and flicks are now watching the ball sail over the infield. It’s disrupted their plans, and it’s paying off for him beautifully,” Gavaskar said.

Gavaskar also praised Rajat Patidar for his commanding knock of 64 off 32 balls, which came after Kohli’s fluent 67 off 42. He emphasized that RCB’s leadership atmosphere is playing a major role in shaping Patidar’s confident style.
“He looks like a captain who feels supported. The setup around him is strong and experienced,” Sunil Gavaskar said.

The veteran also credited Dinesh Karthik’s experience and guidance as a vital influence on Patidar’s leadership. “Rajat is fortunate to have this kind of environment. After 17 years without a trophy, there’s clarity now. He’s calm, and others are stepping up to contribute. That’s how title-winning teams are built,” Gavaskar concluded.
