KL Rahul and Ravindra Jadeja showed some resistance on Day 4 of the third Test at The Gabba, but India’s batting woes remain far from over. With only the last recognized batting pair at the crease, Australia continues to dominate the match in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy. The Indian batting line-up has been under immense criticism throughout this series. Barring KL Rahul, who has been India’s lone consistent performer, the rest of the top order has struggled, failing to deliver on expectations.
Much was anticipated from stalwarts like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, but their underwhelming performances have only amplified concerns. Adding to the disappointment is Shubman Gill, one of India’s brightest young talents, whose series so far has been nothing short of forgettable.
Shubman Gill’s poor returns have caught the attention of cricketing great Sunil Gavaskar, who criticized his shot selection and urged the youngster to be more cautious at the start of his innings. Speaking on Star Sports, Gavaskar said, “Leave your image in the dressing room. Certain shots are dangerous at the start of your innings before you are set, and you don’t have the measure of what the wicket is doing.”

Sunil Gavaskar specifically referred to Gill’s dismissal in the third Test, where he chased a wide delivery from Mitchell Starc and edged it to the gully, where Mitchell Marsh grabbed a brilliant catch. The former Indian captain emphasized that such shots are risky early on and should only be played once a batter is well set.
“Keep all those shots in your back pocket. Take them out when you are 30-40-50 not out. Not a very good shot selection, you could say. It was a very good catch, but he could have left that ball alone,” Sunil Gavaskar added.
Shubman Gill’s numbers reflect his struggles. In three innings so far, he has managed just 60 runs at an average of 20. This is a sharp contrast to his impressive outing in the 2021 Border-Gavaskar Trophy, where he scored 259 runs at a stellar average of 51.80.

India’s batting unit will need to regroup quickly, as their inability to step up has placed the team under immense pressure against a dominant Australian side. With Gill’s potential and talent, all eyes will be on the youngster to turn his fortunes around in the remaining matches.
