Cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar has raised concerns over crowd engagement tactics during India’s high-pressure semifinal against England in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. The former India captain believes spectators should not be prompted to chant Jasprit Bumrah’s name while the pacer is in the middle of his bowling stride, especially during a crucial knockout match.

The moment occurred during the second semifinal at the iconic Wankhede Stadium when the stadium DJ encouraged fans to chant “Boom Boom Bumrah” just as the Indian quick was preparing to deliver the ball. Sunil Gavaskar, who was on commentary, immediately pointed out that such interruptions could affect the rhythm and focus required in elite competition.

According to Sunil Gavaskar, fan chants are welcome but must be timed appropriately. He suggested that the crowd could celebrate players between overs rather than during live play. In his view, maintaining the intensity and seriousness of a World Cup contest should take priority over in-stadium entertainment.

This isn’t the first time Sunil Gavaskar has questioned match-day entertainment during the tournament. Earlier in the competition, both he and former India head coach Ravi Shastri criticised the organisers after a laser show took place during a tense Super 8 clash between India and the West Indies cricket team at Eden Gardens.

Sunil Gavaskar explained that sudden changes in lighting can make it difficult for batters and fielders to quickly adjust their vision once play resumes. Shastri echoed the concern, noting that players often struggle to regain focus after such distractions.

With knockout matches decided by the smallest margins, both legends believe maintaining concentration on the field should remain the top priority during the tournament’s most critical moments.
