As far as the Asia Cup is concerned, India is the most successful team. They have won six out of the 13 editions and are one of the favorites to win this year’s championship in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Their first victory came in 1984 when the inaugural edition of the tournament was played. Only three matches were played out of which India won two of them.
Sunil Gavaskar, the legendary Indian batsman, successfully captained the team to glory. He scored 36 runs from 55 balls against Pakistan in the third match. During the tournament, he sported a mustache, a fashion statement which caught a few eyeballs. Recently, he revealed the reasons why he opted to resort to the style statement.

During a conversation on India Today, Gavaskar said, “Matches used to start very early – I liked my sleep like most of us and I wanted to sleep five extra minutes. I didn’t have to shave my mustache then I can sleep extra five minutes.”
After 24 years, India, under the leadership of Rohit Sharma, is currently playing the 50-overs event in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). India is the defending champions as last time around in 2016, MS Dhoni and his men defeated Bangladesh in the final at Sher-e-Bangla Stadium in Mirpur to clinch the title. In the ongoing event, India is scheduled to first play Hong Kong at Dubai International Cricket Stadium on September 18.
Thereafter, they will lock horns with arch-rivals Pakistan on September 19 at the same venue. Rohit Sharma’s men are also expected to qualify for the Super 4. Recently, India suffered losses in the Test and ODI series in England and they will be keen to turn their fortunes around and put their best foot forward in the multi-nation tournament.
