There is no denying the fact that former Indian skipper, MS Dhoni is arguably the most famous man to emerge from Jharkhand. Ranchi, which is his hometown, was relatively unknown in the cricketing circles before Dhoni making his international debut way back in 2004. The way he performed in his first four ODIs, much thought that he too would join the list of India’s successful wicket-keepers.

But it all changed when the former India skipper amassed as many as 148 against arch-rivals Pakistan in just his fifth ODI. Everything started falling into place for Dhoni from thereon and he soon became an indispensable part of the team across formats. Fast forward to 2019 and the 38-year old is one of the most decorated wicketkeeper-batsmen the game has ever seen.

Dhoni has always been remembered as one of India’s most successful captains, having led India to numerous glories during his highly successful captaincy tenure. And his exploits on the field helped Ranchi to carve its own place in Indian cricket. Ranchi now has its own international stadium and has already hosted international matches as well as IPL matches.

Earlier this year, Jharkhand State Cricket Association renamed a stand in the JSCA Stadium after Dhoni. However, legendary Indian cricketer, Sunil Gavaskar feels the entire stadium should be named after the wicketkeeper-batsman.

Gavaskar made the proposal during his commentating stint in the ongoing third Test between India and South Africa in Ranchi. He said, “There is Pavillion called MS Dhoni in this stadium but this stadium should be called MS Dhoni because he put Ranchi in the cricketing map.”

Talking about the Test, India won the toss and opted to bat. Kagiso Rabada removed Mayank Agarwal for 10 and he followed up the good start by removing Cheteshwar Pujara for a duck. The Indian skipper, Virat Kohli, who scored an unbeaten 254 in Pune, was trapped in front of the stumps by Anrich Nortje, who got his maiden Test scalp as the Indian skipper was dismissed for 12.

Rahane, India’s vice-captain, joined Rohit in the middle and steadied the ship for the hosts. The play for Day 1 was called off at the score of 224/3 in 58 overs due to bad light which was followed by some rain with Rohit batting at 117* and Rahane batting at 83*.
