Legendary Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar hailed India’s historic ICC Women’s World Cup 2025 triumph as a defining chapter in the nation’s cricketing legacy, calling it a moment that “will be remembered for generations.” In a rain-hit final played before a packed crowd at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai, India produced a commanding all-round display to lift their maiden World Cup title.

Batting first, India posted an imposing 298/7, powered by Shafali Verma’s explosive 87 off 78 balls and Deepti Sharma’s composed 58 off 58 deliveries. In reply, South Africa, led by Laura Wolvaardt’s valiant 101, was bowled out for 246, with Deepti starring again by claiming a brilliant five-wicket haul to seal India’s 52-run win.

Gavaskar, visibly emotional, shared his admiration on Instagram, recalling the iconic moment when Harmanpreet Kaur took the final catch that confirmed India’s victory. “What a wonderful time it was at DY Patil Stadium when Harmanpreet took the catch for India to win the Women’s World Cup. What a moment! It was magnificent and unforgettable,” he said in his heartfelt message.

India’s road to glory was anything but easy. After enduring a tough league stage that saw three consecutive defeats, the Women in Blue mounted an inspiring comeback in the knockouts, showcasing resilience and unity. Earlier this year, the U19 women’s team had also defended their T20 World Cup title in Malaysia, further underlining India’s growing dominance in women’s cricket.
