With the third Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy set to begin at the Gabba on Saturday, cricketing legends Sunil Gavaskar and Harbhajan Singh believe the momentum has swung firmly in Australia’s favour. After India’s commanding victory in the first Test at Perth under Jasprit Bumrah’s leadership, Australia roared back with a crushing 10-wicket triumph in Adelaide, levelling the series 1-1.
Sunil Gavaskar emphasized the role momentum plays in a high-stakes series like this. Reflecting on the break between matches, he remarked, “The momentum India had after their win in Perth dissipated during the ten-day gap before the second Test. Now, with Australia’s dominant win in Adelaide and just three days before the Gabba Test, the momentum is undoubtedly with the hosts,” he told Star Sports.

Harbhajan Singh echoed similar sentiments, calling the series one of the most fiercely contested in recent memory due to the resilience shown by both teams. He acknowledged that neither side could have anticipated the dramatic turn of events.
“What happened to Australia in Perth, they wouldn’t have expected, and likewise, India wouldn’t have foreseen what happened in Adelaide. Looking ahead, India must win at least two of the remaining matches to claim the series. While Sydney and Melbourne may provide better opportunities, a win at Gabba could set the tone for India to dominate,” Harbhajan Singh explained.
The Gabba brings back iconic memories for Indian fans. In 2021, a depleted Indian side led by an audacious Rishabh Pant scripted a historic chase of 328 runs, ending Australia’s 32-year unbeaten streak at the venue. Pant’s unbeaten 89 became a symbol of India’s grit and resilience.
