As Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) gear up to face Punjab Kings (PBKS) in the grand finale of IPL 2025 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on June 3, all eyes are on who will script history by lifting their maiden title. With anticipation building, legendary Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar has weighed in on a factor he believes could tip the balance in RCB’s favour — rest and recovery.

RCB, led by Rajat Patidar, sealed their final berth in dominant fashion with a commanding eight-wicket win over the very same Punjab Kings in Qualifier 1 on May 29. That victory earned them a crucial four-day breather before the final.
On the other hand, Punjab had to take the scenic route, bouncing back with a thrilling five-wicket win over Mumbai Indians in Qualifier 2, a match that ended late on June 2 — just a day before the final. According to Gavaskar, the difference in recovery time could have a major impact when the two sides meet under the lights in Ahmedabad.

“It certainly does help,” he said, speaking to India Today. “Punjab Kings only have about 24 hours to recover after an intense game that finished late against Mumbai. That kind of turnaround is brutal, especially after such a physically draining effort. Yes, the final starts at 7:30 PM, but one day isn’t enough for a full recovery.”

He emphasised that RCB will be entering the final in far better shape, both mentally and physically, having had ample time to rest and refocus. “Bengaluru has had four days to recover — that’s huge at this stage of the tournament,” Sunil Gavaskar added.

Gavaskar did, however, point out one potential concern for RCB — their unfamiliarity with the venue. “They haven’t played in Ahmedabad this season, so that might be seen as a disadvantage. But given the kind of form they’re in, I doubt it’ll matter. Their recent performances with both bat and ball have been exceptional. They’ll come into this final with momentum and belief,” he concluded.
The stage is now set for an epic clash, with rest and momentum possibly playing pivotal roles in deciding the champion.
