It’s been more than a week since India lost the inaugural World Test Championship (WTC) Final against New Zealand. With this, they lost another chance to win an ICC Trophy. Notably, between 2007 and 2013, India won all three major ICC Tournaments – the T20 World Cup in 2007, the 2011 World Cup and the Champions Trophy in 2013 under MS Dhoni. And, former India captain Sunil Gavaskar has opened up on this.

However, since Edgbaston 2013, India has come near to the win several times but failed ahead of the final or sometimes reaching the final as well. It is also noteworthy that, India have finished semi-finalists in three ICC events since – 2015 World Cup, 2016 World T20 and the 2019 World Cup while they finished as runner-up thrice – 2014 World T20, 2017 Champions trophy and the just-concluded World Test Championship.

While India have won several series so far, they are facing slam India for their defeat in the final. Even many cricket experts too bashed them as well. Meanwhile,  Sunil Gavaskar has answered: ‘Are India not good at ICC knockout matches?’

“If you look at the last few matches, that seems to be the case. Perhaps there is a mental blockage because of which we are not able to win an ICC title. But about this WTC title, we should remember that the conditions were exactly the ones that New Zealand players face. So they found it a little easy and that was not case with India,” Sunil Gavaskar, a former India captain told Sports Tak.

However, Gavaskar feels that while New Zealand had played well, considering the fact that they had the advantage of as Kane Williamson-led team had played two Tests against England and won by 1-0 as well. As far as India is concerned, they last played against England in Tests earlier this year and featured in an intra-squad match as a part of the match practice before the WTC Final.

“We should remember that before pointing fingers at our team. Think of the fact that the conditions were like New Zealand and that’s what their team took advantage of. That’s why they could win the World Test Championship,” Sunil Gavaskar concluded.
