After his consistent performances for Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy in the last couple of seasons, young Mumbai batter, Sarfaraz Khan has pushed for selection in the Indian Test squad. He finished as the leading run-scorer in the Ranji Trophy this season after scoring 982 runs in nine innings of six games. He scored four centuries this season along with two fifties and played a big role in the team’s run to the final, where they suffered a loss against Madhya Pradesh, despite Sarfaraz’s hundred in the first innings.
The 2021-22 season was the second time the Mumbai cricket superstar has managed to score more than 900 runs in one season. In the 2019-20 season also, he breached the 900-run mark and scored 928 runs in nine innings at an average of 154.66. In that season, he scored three centuries and two half-centuries.
Recently, former Indian skipper, Dilip Vengsarkar called for his inclusion in the team. And in that series, legendary cricketer, Sunil Gavaskar, has joined, and in his column for Mid-Day, he wrote that he will be surprised with the exclusion of the 24-year-old is not selected for India’s next Test series after the Edgbaston Test.
Sunil Gavaskar wrote, “Sarfaraz Khan’s tremendous run of hundreds should bring him into contention for a place in the national team where, with Rahane gone and Pujara getting one last chance to score and keep his place in the team and go on to play a century of Test matches, the door could open for Sarfaraz. He certainly has banged the selection committee’s door down, and it would be a real surprise if his name doesn’t figure in the squad for the next Test series.”
India’s next Test assignment after the one-off English Test which starts this Friday will be against Bangladesh in November after the completion of the 2022 edition of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in Australia.
