Legendary Indian cricketer, batter Sunil Gavaskar said he wishes to see Virat Kohli celebrating his 100th Test by scoring a century in the opening Test against Sri Lanka in Mohali. Kohli is all set to play his 100th Test match when India plays Sri Lanka in the first of a 2-Test series at the PCA Stadium in Mohali from March 4.

Gavaskar, who became the first Indian cricketer to play 100 Tests, said it will be wonderful to see Kohli achieving a record in his landmark match, saying it’s a great feeling to represent your country in 100 Test matches after having a dream of playing in the longest format while growing up.

Kohli will become the 11th Indian cricketer to don the whites for the 100th time after Sachin Tendulkar (200), Rahul Dravid (163), VVS Laxman (134), Anil Kumble (132), Kapil Dev (131), Sunil Gavaskar (125), Dilip Vengsarkar (116), Sourav Ganguly (113), Ishant Sharma (105), Harbhajan Singh (103), and Virender Sehwag (103). However, no Indian has managed to score a century in his 100th Test. Only 9 men have scored a hundred in their landmark 100th Test.

Sunil Gavaskar, while recalling that he got out for 48 in his 100th Test, said: “I hope he celebrates his 100th Test with a 100. Not many batsmen have done that. I know Colin Cowdrey, who was probably the first to play 100 Test matches, scored a hundred in his 100th Test. I know Javed Miandad has done it. Alex Stewart has done it.”

He further added, “Lots of batsmen have played 100 Tests but did not get a hundred in that Test match. I clipped a half volley to square leg when I was batting on 48. Can you believe it, on 48? Simple catch that was.”

Virat Kohli has been stuck at the tally of 70 international centuries since November 2019 when he got past the three-figure mark in a day-night Test against Bangladesh at home. Kohli’s form in Tests has witnessed a dip as he is averaging less than 45 since 2020. He has managed just 760 runs in 14 Tests, including just 4 fifties.

However, the former captain will be heading into his 100th Test after a period of rest. Kohli did not play the final T20I against West Indies and the following three-match T20I series against Sri Lanka.

Shedding light on the feeling of playing 100 Tests for India, Sunil Gavaskar added: “Well, I can only say that it is going to be a sense of achievement. When you start playing cricket as a school kid, you want to play for India and hoping that you play for India for a certain while and suddenly you know, success comes to you and then you go on from year to year and then the 100th Test comes to you. And look at what he has achieved in all formats of the game, not just Test cricket, where he has been fabulous.”
