SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) has welcomed former New Zealand captain Daniel Vettori as their head coach for the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 season. The announcement was made by SRH through their official social media channels on August 7. Following their disappointing performance in the 2023 IPL season, where they finished last despite having a strong lineup, SRH decided to part ways with former coach Brian Lara.
Vettori, who previously served as the spin bowling coach for the Australian team, is no stranger to the IPL coaching realm, having previously coached Royal Challengers Bangalore. Daniel Vettori, known for his illustrious cricketing career, made his debut in Test cricket at a tender age of 18, becoming the youngest male player to represent New Zealand. As a left-arm spinner, Vettori played a pivotal role in the team, achieving the remarkable feat of being the eighth all-rounder to amass 300 Test wickets and 3000 runs.

His batting prowess was equally impressive, accumulating over 4,500 Test runs, including six centuries. Transitioning into coaching after retiring from all forms of cricket post the 2015 Cricket World Cup, Vettori held the position of head coach for Royal Challengers Bangalore in the IPL from 2014 to 2018. He also took on the role of spin bowling coach for the Bangladesh national team.

In August 2021, Vettori assumed the responsibility of head coach for Caribbean Premier League franchise Barbados Royals. His expertise as an assistant and spin bowling coach for Australia significantly contributed to players like Nathan Lyon maintaining their performance levels and unearthing talents like Todd Murphy, who claimed 7 wickets on his Test debut against India.

SRH has faced challenges, consistently occupying the lower half of the IPL table since the 2021 season. Over the past three years, the team has undergone captaincy changes, with David Warner, Kane Williamson, and Aiden Markram taking the helm. Vettori’s appointment as head coach marks the third change in coaching leadership, following the departures of Tom Moody and Brian Lara. As SRH seeks to revitalize its performance, Vettori’s vast coaching experience could be a significant asset
