On Friday, RPSG Group confirmed that they have extended the role of the former India opener Gautam Gambhir as global mentor for their cricketing operations. Gambhir was also the mentor of the Lucknow Super Giants in the last season of the Indian Premier League (IPL), where they made it all the way to the playoffs. The RPS group recently acquired the Durban franchise in the newly minted domestic T20 league in South Africa- SA20 and named it the Durban Super Giants (DSG).
Gautam Gambhir will now be shouldering additional responsibility for mentoring this team as well. He is one of the sharpest cricketing minds in the cricketing fraternity. The former Indian opener played an important role in India’s title win in T20 World Cup 2007 and the 50-over World Cup 2011. In the finals of both tournaments, the left-handed Gambhir played a big role.

Accepting the position, Gautam Gambhir, Global Mentor, Lucknow Super Giants, and Durban’s Super Giants, in an official release, said: “In my ideology of a team sport designations don’t play many roles. At best they are there to facilitate a process to make a team win. As a Global mentor of Super Giants, I look forward to some added responsibility. My intensity and passion to win have just got International wings.”

He further added, “It will be a proud moment to see the Super Giants family leave a global imprint. I thank the Super Giants family for showing that faith in me. Guess it’s time for some more sleepless nights.”

He also won the IPL twice in 2012 and 2014 as the captain of the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and captained the Delhi franchise twice as well.
