In what was the first super over of this season of the Indian Premier League and eight overall, Mumbai Indian defeated Gujarat Lions. Batting first, Jos Buttler and Kieron Pollard took the strike against James Faulkner. Lions would have wanted Andrew Tye to bowl in the super over but he had injured his shoulder earlier, which was the reason why Faulkner was chosen for the big occasion. Faulkner became the first bowler in the history of the IPL to bowl twice in the super over.
Buttler slapped the first delivery to sweeper cover, only to run for a single. Pollard then tonked Faulkner for a four and a six. With 11 runs in three balls, Mumbai Indians looked all set to set a target of 15+ to the Lions. But Faulkner had other plans. He supported well by Aaron Finch and Ishan Kishan. Lions restricted the Indians to 11 in five deliveries. Indians did not even play their full over.
Finch and Brendon McCullum came out to take on Jasprit Bumrah in the second innings of the super over. Bumrah impressed one and all yet again with his skills in such situations. Even after bowling a wide and a no-ball, Bumrah conceded only two runs off the bat in the whole over. Yes, you are reading it right. Only two runs.
Finch and McCullum had absolutely no answer to Bumrah’s pin-point yorkers and deceiving slower deliveries. Pollard (with the bat) and Bumrah (with the ball) had won the match for their side in the super over.
