The 2013 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) was nothing less than a nightmare for the Indian fast bowler S Sreesanth. He was found guilty of spot-fixing, representing the Rajasthan Royals (RR) that also involved his teammates Ajit Chandila and Ankeet Chavan. The incident turned his life upside down ever since as he hasn’t played a competitive match ever since as he received a life ban.

Ever since then, Sreesanth has been fighting a battle with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), who slapped a lifetime ban on him. On Thursday, he didn’t have a great day s the Supreme Court reserved its order on a plea challenging the ban. The apex court has given both the Kerala-born cricketer and the BCCI to file their written submissions in two weeks as per reports in India TV.

The bench consisted of Justice K.M. Joseph and Justice Ashok Bhushan mentioned that the experienced cricketer was found guilty on all three counts- corruption, betting and smudging the reputation of the game. Senior counsel Parag Tripathi, who appeared for the BCCI, remarked that for betting and corruption, the punishment is a life ban from the sport.

Tripathi also said that at no point in time did Sreesanth bring the matter to BCCI’s notice. Moreover, he remarked that the fiery pacer never explained about the amount of ₹10 lakhs, that came to the fore after a telephonic conversation. Salman Khurshid, who appeared for Sreesanth, said that it was up to the BCCI to prove that the amount came from a mysterious source.

In an accused over where Sreesanth was to concede 14 runs, only 13 runs were recorded. It was later contended against the bowler that he had bowled a no-ball and the umpire failed to notice the same as well. Khurshid said that the transaction would only take place had Sreesanth conceded 14 runs. He also urged the Supreme court to save the career of the cricketer.
