The Supreme Court of India has issued notices to Indian fast bowler Mohammed Shami and the West Bengal government after his estranged wife, Hasin Jahan, moved the apex court seeking a significant enhancement in monthly maintenance for herself and their daughter. The matter, rooted in a long-standing dispute between the two, has once again brought their personal battle into the legal spotlight.

Jahan has challenged a previous Calcutta High Court order that awarded her ₹1.5 lakh per month and ₹2.5 lakh per month for their daughter. In her latest petition, she argued that the maintenance amount does not reflect Shami’s current financial stature, his earnings as an international cricketer, or the lifestyle he is able to afford. She urged the Supreme Court to revise the amount upward, calling it essential for ensuring a dignified and secure future for their child.
During the initial hearing, the Supreme Court bench remarked, “Isn’t ₹4 lakh per month already a lot of money?” However, the court still proceeded to seek formal responses from both Mohammed Shami and the West Bengal government, granting them four weeks to file their replies. The matter is expected to be taken up again in December.

Representing Jahan, her counsel argued that Mohammed Shami’s income and assets extend far beyond what the current maintenance order accounts for.

“He earns significantly more than what is being considered. He owns properties worth crores, possesses luxury vehicles, travels extensively, and enjoys a lavish lifestyle,” her lawyer stated. The plea also alleged that Mohammed Shami had defaulted on multiple payments despite orders from both the family court and the High Court.
Hasin Jahan emphasised that the battle was not about her personal entitlement but about securing a lifestyle for their daughter that mirrors the opportunities Mohammed Shami can provide. According to the petition, the child deserves access to quality education, social circles similar to her father’s, and a dignified upbringing.

This case adds another chapter to the tumultuous legal journey that began in 2018 when Jahan levelled allegations of domestic abuse, dowry harassment, and financial misconduct. Though Mohammed Shami has consistently refrained from commenting on these issues publicly, he has maintained that cricket remains his priority.
With both parties now required to respond, the Supreme Court will revisit the matter in December, setting the stage for yet another crucial hearing in this long-drawn legal saga.
