Days back, the BCCI announced India’s ODI and T20I squads for the Sri Lanka tour, which begins on July 27. Rohit Sharma will be leading the ODI outfit, while Yadav has been entrusted with the leadership duties of the T20I team with Shubman Gill as his deputy.

The news has come as a shock to many, with the presence of Hardik Pandya in the T20I setup itself, who has led the side in the past.  Suryakumar Yadav reacted to his new role with gratitude and eagerness.

“Thank you so much for the outpouring of love, support, and best wishes from all of you. It’s been no less than a dream for the past few weeks; feeling really grateful. Playing for the country is simply a different feeling—truly special and something which I will never be able to express through words. This new role comes with a lot of responsibility, excitement, and enthusiasm. Hopefully, keep getting the same love and blessings. All the fame goes to God. “God is great,” Suryakumar Yadav captioned an emotional post on Instagram.

It is noteworthy that Yadav’s red-hot form in T20s, and his prior experience of captaining Team India in seven matches in 2023 during the absence of Pandya, may have had a say in this decision.

Gautam Gambhir, presently the head coach of the Indian team, has been vocal about Yadav’s leadership abilities ever since their time together in the Kolkata Knight Riders. The forthcoming tour would prove to be the acid test of prolific batter Yadav’s leadership acumen by leading the team to success in Sri Lanka.
