Serial winners rarely dwell on past achievements, and Suryakumar Yadav seems determined to follow that path. The stylish batter and current T20I captain of the India national cricket team has already begun setting his sights on future milestones after leading India to glory in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026. On Sunday, Suryakumar etched his name in Indian cricket history by becoming only the third captain from India to win the T20 World Cup, joining the legendary duo of MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma.

The triumph came at the iconic Narendra Modi Stadium, where India crushed the New Zealand national cricket team by 96 runs in the final to claim a record third T20 World Cup title. India’s victory was built on a complete team performance. After piling up a massive 255/5 in 20 overs, the hosts dominated with the ball and bowled New Zealand out for 159 in the 19th over, sparking celebrations across the packed stadium.

Despite the magnitude of the achievement, Suryakumar Yadavwas already thinking about the next targets. Speaking to the media after the match, he revealed two big goals for the coming years. “The next goal is the Olympics – Olympic gold – and also the T20 World Cup that year. Don’t forget,” Suryakumar said.

With cricket set to feature at the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, the Indian skipper is clearly motivated by the prospect of winning a historic gold medal for the country while also defending the T20 World Cup crown in the same year. Reflecting on the immediate moment after the final, Suryakumar admitted the emotions were still settling in.

“It’ll take a little time to sink in. We’ve just come out of the game. It was a good match, playing at home,” he said. “When we wake up tomorrow and go back home – I don’t even know where we’re going – it will be a special feeling.” The 35-year-old also looked back on the remarkable journey India has had since their previous world title. “Whatever has happened in the last two years since the 2024 T20 World Cup has been unbelievable, and I don’t know how to express it. It has been a wonderful journey,” he added.

Interestingly, Suryakumar Yadav acknowledged that India’s campaign had a slightly uncertain beginning. “Obviously, it has been a wonderful journey over the last month, though it didn’t start the way we wanted. But that’s part of sport,” he explained. “Throughout the journey until today, it has been very special, and what we’ve achieved collectively as a team is there for everyone to see.”

The captain also reflected on a defining moment in his career — his sensational catch in the final of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 against South Africa.

“That catch changed my life completely because it was the moment of the tournament,” Suryakumar Yadav said. “No team had ever won it in India. When you play a T20 World Cup or any tournament in India, there is a different vibe and excitement.”

Looking ahead, the Indian captain wants the team to maintain its dominance in global tournaments.

“We won the ICC Champions Trophy in 2025, playing a completely different brand of cricket,” he said, referring to the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. “And now, in 2026, we wanted to do something special in front of the home crowd right here. We want to keep doing that in 2027, 2028, 2029 – and never stop.”
