India’s T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav has been away from competitive cricket for a while, last seen in action during IPL 2025 with the Mumbai Indians. The franchise’s campaign ended in heartbreak at the second qualifier, where they fell short against Punjab Kings. Soon after the IPL, Suryakumar underwent surgery for a sports hernia in his lower right abdomen. His road to recovery has been swift and focused. He was briefly spotted enjoying the Wimbledon Championships before checking into the BCCI Centre of Excellence (COE) in Bengaluru in mid-July to regain full match fitness.

Ever since, the star batter has kept fans engaged by sharing glimpses of his training. On Friday, he posted an energetic gym montage featuring heavy weightlifting, captioned: “Can’t wait to be back doing what I love.” India Test batter Karun Nair added to the buzz by replying, “Let’s go.”

Yadav, who has led India in T20Is for a considerable period, is expected to continue as captain for the upcoming Asia Cup 2025. However, his participation hinges on a fitness clearance. If he passes the tests, he is almost certain to lead the squad, with team selection scheduled for late August.

The Asia Cup kicks off in the UAE on September 9, with Afghanistan facing Hong Kong at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium, Abu Dhabi. India’s campaign begins a day later against UAE at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. The tournament, initially planned in India, was shifted due to geopolitical tensions with Pakistan.

Eight teams—India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, UAE, Hong Kong, and Oman—are split into two groups of four. India and Pakistan are placed in the same group, setting the stage for a high-voltage clash.
