Suryakumar Yadav’s much-anticipated return to the Indian Premier League (IPL) turned out to be a disappointment as he fell for a duck during Mumbai Indians’ clash against Delhi Capitals at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. Yadav, who had been sidelined due to injury since the South Africa tour, faced a setback in his comeback journey.

The Mumbai batter’s absence stemmed from an ankle injury followed by a sports hernia infection, which prolonged his time away from the field. Despite rigorous rehabilitation and training at the National Cricket Academy, Yadav’s return did not unfold as planned.

Coming in to bat after Rohit Sharma’s dismissal in the seventh over, Yadav was caught by substitute fielder Jake Fraser-McGruck off Anrich Nortje’s bowling. His return to action marked a significant moment, especially considering his status as the world’s number one T20I batter.

The decision to green-light his comeback was a cautious one, with both the BCCI and the NCA physios ensuring Yadav’s complete fitness before his return to competitive cricket. This cautious approach aimed to mitigate any risk of aggravating his injury, particularly with the impending 2024 T20 World Cup in the West Indies and USA.

Despite MI’s struggles in the initial matches of the 2024 season, Yadav’s return was anticipated to bolster the team’s performance. MI, yet to secure a win in their first three matches, looked to turn the tide with Yadav’s inclusion. Meanwhile, Delhi Capitals sought to bounce back from a demoralizing 106-run defeat against Kolkata Knight Riders, setting the stage for an intriguing clash between the two teams.
