ESPN Cricinfo reported that Suryakumar injured his hand while fielding for Mumbai in the Buchi Babu Tournament against the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association XI in Coimbatore. An injury in only the 38th over of the tournament brought into question his fitness just ahead of crucial fixtures. How serious the injury is not known, which puts a question mark over his participation in the Duleep Trophy.

But with the injury, even the prospects of him playing in this series are in doubt.

Before his injury, Suryakumar had indicated his desperation to get back into the Test fold. During an interaction with ESPN Cricinfo, he said, “For now, my immediate focus would be doing well in the Buchi Babu Tournament and the Duleep Trophy”. He spoke about the importance of those 10 Test matches lined up over the next few months, saying his excitement for red-ball cricket.
