India’s relationship with ICC knockout matches at Wankhede Stadium has been complicated over the years. Apart from their memorable victory against the New Zealand team in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023, the venue hasn’t always been kind to them in high-stakes clashes. One of their most painful defeats here came against the England team in the semifinal of the 1987 Cricket World Cup. Ironically, England once again stands in India’s path as the two sides prepare for another crucial semifinal under the Mumbai lights.

This time, however, neither team enters the contest looking invincible. Suryakumar Yadav’s India and Harry Brook’s England have both shown flashes of brilliance but also moments of vulnerability during the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026. Rather than a clash of dominant sides, the semifinal shapes up as a battle of composure—whichever team handles pressure better could book its place in the final.

India’s journey to the last four has been powered largely by individual brilliance rather than consistent team performances. The captain, Suryakumar Yadav, stepped up against the United States national cricket team, while Ishan Kishan produced crucial knocks against Namibia national cricket team and Pakistan. Shivam Dube delivered important contributions against the Netherlands and South Africa, while Abhishek Sharma and Hardik Pandya combined effectively against Zimbabwe. More recently, Sanju Samson played a key role in the win over the West Indies cricket team.

Yet, inconsistency remains a concern. Abhishek Sharma has been unpredictable with the bat, while Varun Chakaravarthy has struggled to deliver consistently with the ball. Even Suryakumar Yadav, aside from the opening match, hasn’t quite produced the dominance expected from him. Perhaps the biggest worry has been India’s fielding, with dropped catches and missed chances repeatedly putting pressure on the bowlers.

Amid these ups and downs, Jasprit Bumrah has once again proven to be India’s crisis manager. His spells have often pulled the team back into games when situations appeared to be slipping away. Arshdeep Singh, with his wide yorkers, and Hardik Pandya, with clever slower deliveries, have also chipped in, though their impact has been somewhat inconsistent.

India’s bowling coach Morne Morkel emphasised the importance of a collective effort ahead of the semifinal. He believes the team has shown that different players can step up on different days, but hopes the squad can now produce a complete performance when it matters most.

For India, familiarity with Wankhede could prove advantageous. Several players, including Suryakumar Yadav, Hardik Pandya, Jasprit Bumrah, Shivam Dube, and Ishan Kishan, have strong connections with Mumbai cricket and the Mumbai Indians franchise. That’s why, chances of them making changes in the XI are very unlikely, despite rumours suggesting Rinku Singh to replace Abhishek Sharma.

Probable XI: Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson (wk), Ishan Kishan, Suryakumar Yadav (c), Tilak Varma, Hardik Pandya, Shivam Dube, Axar Patel, Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh, Varun Chakaravarthy

Meanwhile, England have had their own roller-coaster campaign. Captain Harry Brook produced a match-winning century against the Pakistan national cricket team, while Rehan Ahmed’s cameo helped rescue them against New Zealand. With the semifinal pitch expected to produce runs, both sides know that a single standout performance could decide who advances to the final in Ahmedabad.

Probable XI: Phil Salt, Jos Buttler (wk), Harry Brook (c), Jacob Bethell, Tom Banton, Sam Curran, Will Jacks, Jamie Overton, Liam Dawson, Jofra Archer, Adil Rashid
