T20 World Cup Final On Verge Of Breaking Crowd Attendance Record

The iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) is all geared up to witness the biggest-ever crowd for a women’s game when India and Australia will be locking horns with each other in the  T20 World Cup final on Sunday evening. Tweeting about the same, T20 World Cup handle wrote: “48 hours to go until the ICC Women’s #T20WorldCup Final and over 75,000 tickets have been snapped up.”

As per a tweet by the head of female engagement at Cricket Australia, Sarah Styles fans bought 15,000 tickets on Friday itself. While Melbourne comprises a sizeable Indian population, a large chunk of the tickets has been bought by the Bharat Army, the famous fan group which travels around the world to support the men’s Indian team. Clearly, now the Bharat Army is supporting the women’s team as well.

Earlier this month, the legendary cricketer, Sachin Tendulkar had predicted that the final will break the record for the highest ever attendance for a women’s sports event. He had tweeted: “Sport is a great equalizer! The Women’s @T20WorldCup is coming up soon and the Finals will be played at the MCG. Let’s #FILLTHEMCG for the #T20WorldCup Final and make it an event to remember”.

Australia will be playing their sixth final, and won the title on four occasions, while India has made it to the summit clash of the T20 World Cup for the first time. The day of the final, March 8, incidentally also happens to be the birthday of Indian women’s team captain Harmanpreet Kaur.

As Australia defeated South Africa in the second semi-final in Sydney on Thursday, the defending champions entered their sixth consecutive final in the tournament’s history. Australia has been part of every women’s T20 World Cup final since 2010. On the other hand, India entered their maiden T20 World Cup final on Thursday as their semi-final game against England was washed off without a ball being bowled in Sydney.

India is the only team in the tournament which is yet to lose a match. When the two teams met in the group stages, Harmanpreet Kaur led India to a comfortable 17-run victory.
