Virat Kohli’s retirement from Test cricket continues to spark debate, with Afghanistan and Taliban leader Anas Haqqani now weighing in. While acknowledging Rohit Sharma’s decision to step away from the longest format as “justified,” Haqqani felt Kohli’s exit came far too early. He even suggested that the Indian batting great, if fit, should aim to play until the age of 50.

Kohli, who announced his Test retirement on May 12, closed a glorious 14-year career in the format, finishing with 9,230 runs in 123 matches. In his statement, the former India captain thanked fans, reflected on his personal growth, and revealed that he felt it was the right time to move on after giving everything to Test cricket.

Speaking on Shubhankar Mishra’s podcast, Anas Haqqani said, “Rohit’s retirement from Tests was justified. I don’t know the cause behind Kohli’s retirement. Very few people are that unique. I would like him to play till 50. Maybe he was irritated by the media in India. He still had time. Look at Joe Root chasing Sachin Tendulkar’s tally of runs.”

Haqqani’s remarks echo a common sentiment across the cricketing fraternity. Former West Indies legend Chris Gayle, who shared the dressing room with Kohli at Royal Challengers Bengaluru, also felt the decision came prematurely.

“Very early, very early. For whatever reason, I don’t know. But cricket will miss him, 100%. He’s a massive, massive figure for the game,” Gayle said.

Virat Kohli, who captained India in 68 Tests and secured 40 wins, remains one of the country’s most successful leaders in red-ball cricket. His record includes 30 centuries and seven double tons, firmly placing him among India’s all-time greats.

Though retired from Tests, Kohli isn’t done yet. He is set to return next month in the ODI series against Australia, having last appeared in the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy, where he produced match-winning knocks against both Pakistan and Australia.
