Taskin Ahmed demonstrated the true spirit of cricket as a gentleman’s game with a heartwarming gesture during the first India vs. Bangladesh Test at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Thursday (September 19). The incident unfolded in the third session when the Bangladesh pacer was bowling to India’s seasoned spinner and batsman, Ravichandran Ashwin.

Typically, fast bowlers avoid bowling bouncers to tailenders or lower-order batsmen, but if they do, they tend to ensure that it doesn’t pose a serious threat. However, Ashwin, unlike a typical tailender, is a skilled batsman with numerous valuable knocks to his name. This might have prompted Taskin to test Ashwin with a sharp bouncer. The event took place in the 49th over when Taskin decided to deliver a well-directed short ball aimed right at Ashwin’s helmet.

Caught off guard, Ashwin misjudged the pace of the bouncer and turned away, losing sight of the ball. The delivery struck the front of his helmet and then deflected towards the slip cordon. The sight had many holding their breath for a moment, but Ashwin seemed unharmed. Immediately, Taskin raised his hand in a gesture of apology, embodying the sportsmanship that cricket is known for.

The umpire quickly stepped in to check on Ashwin, while the team physio rushed out to assess the situation. Fortunately, Ashwin signalled he was fine, allowing the game to continue shortly thereafter.

As the match progressed, Ashwin, along with Ravindra Jadeja, worked to stabilize India’s innings after a precarious start. At one point, the hosts were struggling at 144 for 6, with Bangladesh looking to seize control. However, the experienced pair turned the tide for India, bringing some much-needed calm. By the time this report was written, India had managed to reach 208 for 6, with Ashwin settled at 40 and Jadeja at 20, showcasing a determined partnership to steer India out of trouble.
