Team India ended a 12-year wait for the Champions Trophy, securing a record-breaking third title with a thrilling four-wicket victory over New Zealand in the CT 2025 final at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Sunday. Chasing a challenging 252-run target after being put into bat by Kiwi skipper Mitchell Santner, India got off to a flying start.

Rohit Sharma, leading from the front, smashed a scintillating half-century, reaching the mark in just 41 balls with three towering sixes and a flurry of boundaries. Team India raced to their fastest team fifty of the tournament in just 7.1 overs, setting the perfect platform. However, the dismissals of Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli in quick succession, followed by Rohit’s departure for 76, allowed New Zealand a glimmer of hope.

With the game hanging in the balance, Shreyas Iyer and Axar Patel steadied the ship, followed by a crucial partnership between KL Rahul and Hardik Pandya that swung the momentum back in India’s favour. The winning runs came off Ravindra Jadeja’s bat in the penultimate over, as he guided the ball past mid-wicket off pacer Will O’Rourke, sealing a hard-fought victory.

India’s triumph now places them ahead of Australia with three Champions Trophy titles, adding to their 2002 (shared with Sri Lanka) and 2013 victories. The win also extends India’s dominance in ICC white-ball tournaments, following their T20 World Cup triumph just eight months ago. Remarkably, since the start of the 2023 ODI World Cup, Team India has lost just one out of 23 ICC limited-overs matches—ironically, the CWC final against Australia.

This historic victory also marks India’s seventh ICC title, making them second only to Australia’s 10. Rohit Sharma joins MS Dhoni as the only Indian captain to win multiple ICC trophies, cementing his legacy.

Following the win, former cricketers and Bollywood stars flooded social media with congratulatory messages for Team India.
