As the much-anticipated Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia draws near, Team India has ramped up its preparations with an intensive practice session ahead of the first Test in Perth. Under the watchful eye of fielding coach T Dilip, the team engaged in innovative drills designed to sharpen their fielding skills, particularly focusing on boundary and relay throws.
Although inclement weather briefly interrupted the session, the players returned with renewed vigour once conditions improved. The practice resumed with warm-ups, fielding drills, and even a light-hearted football juggling contest, injecting some fun into the intense training atmosphere. A significant portion of the session emphasized refining relay throws, moving away from traditional loopy throws to flat and precise ones.
T Dilip, speaking in a video shared by the BCCI, highlighted the importance of these specialized drills. “We wanted to replicate match scenarios today, focusing on retrieval where a boundary fielder throws to an infielder. Instead of a single loopy throw, we aimed for two flat, accurate throws to ensure efficiency and awareness of positioning. This helps players reduce time lost in turns and stand in the optimal spot,” he explained.

“So players on the boundary are aware there’s another teammate waiting for the throw. They can execute a bouncing, full-length throw into their hands seamlessly,” T Dilip added.

The fielding coach expressed satisfaction with the team’s response to the drills. “The players have shown incredible intensity and dedication. Whether it’s slip catching, outfield drills, or running back, their commitment is evident. I often had to hold them back as they were so eager. This session was a perfect culmination of the efforts we’ve put in over the last few days,” he remarked, praising the team’s camaraderie and work ethic.
As the opening Test approaches, Team India’s meticulous preparation and focus on fine-tuning their fielding could be the key to outclassing the formidable Australian side.
