South Africa captain Temba Bavuma has heaped praise on India’s rising star Dhruv Jurel, calling him a “fantastic batter” after watching him closely during the recent four-day game between India A and South Africa A in Bengaluru. Bavuma, who featured in the second unofficial Test at the National Centre of Excellence, was particularly impressed by Jurel’s technique, temperament, and ability to bat with intent.

As India prepare to face South Africa in the opening Test at Eden Gardens, Kolkata, on November 14, Jurel’s name continues to generate buzz within cricketing circles. While Rishabh Pant has made a much-awaited return to the Test squad after recovering from his foot fracture sustained during the England series, the team management is reportedly considering Jurel as a specialist batter in the playing XI.
Speaking on Star Sports’ Follow the Blues, Temba Bavuma said, “I was part of the South Africa A squad during the four-day series in Bengaluru. I played the second Test and got to see Dhruv Jurel closely. I think he is a fantastic batter—technically proficient and plays with great intensity.”

He further added, “For the future of Indian cricket, I can see him playing a big role if he continues to develop the way he is. He has the right mindset and maturity for international cricket.”

Jurel’s numbers speak for themselves. In just seven Tests, the 23-year-old has scored 430 runs at an average of 47.77, including twin unbeaten centuries in the unofficial Test against South Africa A. His composure and shot selection have earned him praise from veterans and coaches alike.

India’s assistant coach Ryan Ten Doeschate confirmed on Wednesday that Jurel will be part of the XI for the opening Test, replacing Nitish Kumar Reddy. “We are clear about our combination going into the first Test,” Ten Doeschate said, adding that Jurel’s inclusion strengthens the middle order.
Now over a year into his international career, Jurel’s rise represents the new wave of Indian talent—confident, fearless, and ready to seize the big stage.
