24th February 2010, it was the historical day in ODI cricket when legendary Indian batsman Sachin Tendulkar became the first player to score an ODI double-hundred. The right-handed batsman was unbeaten on 200 runs off 147 balls—today Twitterati celebrating the eighth anniversary of that marvelous knock.

It was the second ODI of the three-match ODI series between the hosts India and visitors South Africa at Captain Roop Singh Stadium (Gwalior). Leading by the 1-0 in that series, India won the toss in that encounter and decided to bat first.

After opener Virender Sehwag fell early, another opener Sachin Tendulkar took the responsibility to build up the innings along with Dinesh Karthik. They put 194 runs partnership before Karthik was sent back to the pavilion on 79 runs off 85 balls. During that partnership, Sachin already completed his 46th ODI century in just 90 balls.

Yusuf Pathan was the next batsman to join with Tendulkar and geared up the innings with his fast batting. However, Pathan failed to convert into the big knock but provided an 81-runs partnership in just 47 balls. During Pathan’s dismissal, India was on 300/3 in 41.1 overs and looking for a mammoth total.

Skipper MS Dhoni joined with Tendulkar and carried the innings till the end of the match. Both batsmen were bashing the Proteas bowlers and put another 101-runs unbroken partnership for the fourth wicket as Indian finished on 401/3. Dhoni remained unbeaten on 68 runs off just 35 balls.

But the main character in that innings was Sachin Tendulkar. That knock was a great thrill, including his final run to complete the 200-runs mark. At the end of 49th over, Sachin was batting on 199 runs. Dhoni was on strike in the first ball of the last over, and Sachin got his first strike in that over in the third delivery.

South African pacer Charl Langeveldt bowled outside the off-stump, which Tendulkar pushed to the point and successfully ran for a single to complete the first-ever double-century in ODI history. Some moments earlier in that innings, Sachin broke the record of the previous highest ODI knock, which was 194 runs by Charles Coventry (Zimbabwe; 194*) and Saeed Anwar (Pakistan 194).

In reply, despite a phenomenal century knock by AB de Villiers (114*), South Africa was bundled out for just 248 runs (42.5 overs) as India won by 153 runs. With that victory, India also secured the three-match ODI series by leading the series 2-0 margin at the end of the match.
