To everyone’s surprise, Kerala’s Basil Thampi was introduced by his Gujarat Lions’ captain, Suresh Raina, in the 10th over. Eyeballs around the nation were expecting to see him at least in the powerplay. Such was the hype created around the 23-year old right-arm fast bowler.
Call it the pressure of the big stage or the pressure of an in-form duo of David Warner and Moises Henriques, Lions were almost down and out of the match by this time. Warner and Henriques were beating the Lions’ bowling to all parts of the ground. This happened on the last delivery of the same over. Having already conceded 12 in the over, Thampi lost his shoe in his follow-through. In what an out of the blue reaction, Warner (in between completing a run) bent down, picked up the bowler’s shoe and handed it back to him (before completing the run).
It was an act of kindness from one of the best batsmen of the world. Credits to which should be given to the IPL Fairplay award.
