Former England batter Kevin Pietersen has taken a sharp swipe at the Bazball era under head coach Brendon McCullum after England’s heavy 253-run defeat to New Zealand in the second Test at The Oval. The loss has intensified scrutiny on England’s Test approach, which continues to attract praise for its intent but criticism for its inconsistency.

England entered the series under pressure after a disappointing 4-1 Ashes defeat over the winter, and while they began with a win at Lord’s, the cracks in their method were exposed in South London. The defeat was followed by off-field drama as well, with captain Ben Stokes and pace bowler Gus Atkinson both caught up in a nightclub incident that led to their omission from the second Test.
Pietersen, never one to hold back, suggested that criticism of England’s Test side was inevitable once results started to turn. Talking to X, he said the backlash had arrived sooner than expected, but noted that the warning signs had been there for some time. His message was clear: in English cricket, poor results and controversy rarely stay quiet for long.

“Jeepers – the [knives] are out for Bazball, a lot quicker than I expected. But, the writing was on the wall a few weeks ago. A wise friend once told me about here in the UK…the pen is mightier than the sword,” Kevin Pietersen posted.

England’s problems deepened further when the ICC handed them a 12-point deduction in the World Test Championship for a slow over-rate during the Oval Test, along with a fine worth 50 per cent of their match fees. Despite winning the first Test, the Three Lions now sit seventh in the WTC standings, ahead of only Pakistan and the West Indies.

The series now moves to Trent Bridge in Nottingham for the decider on June 25, with Stokes and Atkinson back in the squad after serving a one-match suspension. Stokes returns as captain after Joe Root led the side in the second Test.
