Vinod Rai, the chief of Supreme Court appointed Committee of Administration (CoA) for the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), is happy with the latest SC verdict on Lodha committee reforms.
After mentioning it as a “very positive verdict”, Rai stated that the good thing is a fixed timeline has been set to implement the Lodha committee reforms.
Rai told Sportstar, “It is a very positive verdict. I am very satisfied with it. It has got good things because it has maintained the main aspects of the (Lodha) recommendation. The good thing is that it has fixed a timeline in which it has to be implemented. It is a very satisfying verdict.”

The Lodha panel’s cooling-off period recommendation has been slightly changed in the new SC verdict. While the committee proposed the ‘cooling-off period’ for every administration has to be applicable after each three-year term, the new verdict has said that the ‘cooling-off period’ for every administration will be available after the six-year term. However, the maximum nine-year rule is still remained untouched.
Talking about that verdict, Rai said, “That (the cooling off period dilution) is okay. Sometime ago, even I had said that I am okay with two terms before the cooling-off. As long as the nine-year rule remains, there should not be any problem. The basics are maintained properly.”

Another CoA member and former Indian women’s cricket team captain, Diana Edulji has also welcomed the latest SC verdict.
Talking about the new ‘cooling-off period’ verdict, Edulji told Sportstar, “To be frank, I may have my personal views. But continuity is good. Even the US President has two terms, so there is no harm in that. But I must see the fine print first. It is their (Supreme Court’s) wisdom if they felt this way, I don’t have any problems in that. I will be there to implement this order also.”
SC has also asked the state cricket associations to adopt the BCCI constitution within 30 days of the order and Rai has supported it hugely.
Rai said on that, “That’s the most important thing. That the state associations will have to mirror the BCCI (constitution) is definitely a good thing.”

However, SC hasn’t accepted Lodha committee’s one-state-one-vote policy recommendation in the new verdict. Also, in the new SC verdict, Railways, Services and Universities have got back their permanent membership status and similarly Mumbai, Saurashtra, Vadodara and Vidarbha have also received the membership status.
