Former India cricketer Suresh Raina believes Royal Challengers Bengaluru are serious contenders for the IPL 2025 title and could finally break their trophy drought. According to Raina, this season feels different for the franchise, not just in terms of results but also in their attitude and execution on the field.

Speaking on Star Sports, Raina highlighted how RCB’s ability to defend low scores at the Chinnaswamy—a venue notorious for high totals—shows how well-rounded and focused the side has become.
“There’s something different about them this year. They’ve successfully defended totals like 150 and even 136 at Chinnaswamy, which is unheard of. The bowling unit is clicking, and that’s always been the missing piece,” Suresh Raina explained. He also pointed to the leadership of Rajat Patidar, who has led the team to double victories over Chennai Super Kings this season—both in Chennai and at home. “These are signs of a team that’s ready to go the distance,” he added.

Raina believes the stars might finally align for Virat Kohli, who has come agonisingly close to winning the title in the past, most notably in 2016, when RCB lost a heartbreaker to Sunrisers Hyderabad in the final at their home ground.

“This could be Virat’s year. After 18 seasons, perhaps the stars are finally in his favour,” Suresh Raina said. He acknowledged that teams like Mumbai Indians, Gujarat Titans, and Punjab Kings are still in the mix, but the momentum RCB has built is undeniable.
With IPL 2025 resuming on May 17 after a 10-day break due to geopolitical tensions, RCB will face Kolkata Knight Riders in a crucial game. Kohli, who recently announced his retirement from Test cricket, will undoubtedly be at the centre of attention.

Raina also paid tribute to Kohli’s legacy, tweeting earlier in the week, “Your passion & leadership in Test cricket have inspired millions, brother! Love and respect bro @imVkohli.”

Bengaluru currently sits second on the points table with 16 points from 11 matches, and a win on Saturday will secure their place in the playoffs.
