India batter Tilak Varma has responded to the criticism surrounding his recent T20I strike rate, insisting that his primary responsibility is to play according to the team’s requirements rather than chase personal milestones. Ahead of India’s three-match T20I series against Zimbabwe, the left-handed batter made it clear that adapting to different match situations is more important than maintaining an eye-catching strike rate.
Tilak played a crucial role in India’s victorious 2026 T20 World Cup campaign but has faced increased scrutiny since then. The 23-year-old endured a difficult series against Ireland, managing a strike rate of just 110 in two matches as India suffered a surprising 2-0 series defeat. Although he improved his scoring rate to 152.94 during the five-match T20I series against England, he averaged only 26, with India losing the series 4-0.
Addressing the criticism during the pre-series press conference, Tilak Varma explained that batting in T20 cricket is heavily influenced by match situations and team strategy.

“In this game, you have to bat in different positions, and especially in such conditions, it’s not easy. I always do whatever the team requires. If I have to grind it out, I will. If I have to attack from the very first ball, I can do that as well,” Tilak Varma said.
The youngster further highlighted the added responsibility that comes with being India’s vice-captain in the T20I setup. According to him, every role assigned by the team management is based on careful planning, and his focus remains on fulfilling those expectations.
“When you’re playing for the country, there are a lot of responsibilities. The team’s plans keep changing depending on the situation. As vice-captain, I understand the trust the management has placed in me, and I try to play according to those plans,” he added.

Despite recent criticism, Tilak’s overall T20I record remains impressive. The stylish left-hander has scored more than 1,500 runs in 56 T20Is at an average of 42.37 while maintaining a strike rate close to 144, underlining his consistency in the shortest format.
Tilak Varma also defended his approach during the Ireland and England series by pointing out that India frequently lost four or five wickets inside the powerplay or within the first 10 overs. In such scenarios, he believes reckless attacking would have only worsened the team’s position. “If four or five wickets fall early, it doesn’t make sense to walk in and get out while trying to accelerate. My responsibility is to stabilize the innings first and then bat according to what the team needs,” Tilak explained.
