Mumbai Indians batter Tilak Varma received a huge lifeline during the crucial IPL 2026 clash against Kolkata Knight Riders after a rare mix-up between Varun Chakravarthy and wicketkeeper Angkrish Raghuvanshi denied KKR a golden opportunity at Eden Gardens on Wednesday. The incident took place when Tilak attempted an aerial shot that should have comfortably ended his innings. Varun Chakravarthy had positioned himself perfectly underneath the ball and appeared set to complete a safe catch with both hands.

However, just as the spinner settled under it, wicketkeeper Angkrish Raghuvanshi charged forward aggressively in an attempt to grab the catch himself. The unexpected collision disrupted Varun’s balance and the ball eventually popped out of his hands, leaving the KKR players stunned. Chakravarthy looked visibly frustrated immediately after the dropped chance, especially because he had clearly called for the catch early.
For the Mumbai Indians, the moment came as a major relief after an already disastrous start inside the powerplay. The five-time champions had lost multiple wickets early, including Rohit Sharma, Ryan Rickelton and Naman Dhir, with KKR’s bowlers completely dominating proceedings.

However, despite surviving the scare, Tilak Varma failed to make full use of the opportunity. The left-hander, who has been one of MI’s better performers in IPL 2026 and already has a century this season, struggled badly against KKR’s disciplined bowling attack and the slow Eden Gardens surface.
Tilak eventually managed just 20 runs from 32 deliveries before being dismissed, registering an extremely rare strike rate of 62.5 in a T20 game. According to Cricbuzz statistics, the last IPL batter to face more than 30 balls at a lower strike rate was Michael Hussey, who scored 19 off 32 balls for Chennai Super Kings against Rajasthan Royals back in 2012.

Why does MI send him in early – he cannot play spin and always starts super-slow..

Ajinkya Rahane’s decision to bowl first after winning the toss proved spot on as KKR’s bowlers exploited the dry surface brilliantly. Even a brief rain interruption during the innings failed to shift momentum away from the hosts.
Former Australia captain Michael Clarke had predicted before the match that spin and variation in pace would dominate the contest at Eden Gardens.

“I think the wicket’s super dry. Even if it doesn’t turn massively, that change of pace and natural variation will play a big role tonight,” Clarke observed before the toss. With their playoff hopes still alive, Kolkata Knight Riders delivered a clinical bowling performance and remained firmly in control for most of the innings.
