After rediscovering his form in the ongoing ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, Tilak Varma has made it clear that India national cricket team will continue to back their aggressive batting approach, regardless of early setbacks in matches. India showcased that fearless strategy in their crucial Super 8 clash against the Zimbabwe national cricket team, posting a massive 256/4 and eventually sealing a commanding 72-run victory.

The dominant batting display was a collective effort, with multiple players contributing quick runs across phases of the innings. Speaking at the post-match press conference, Tilak emphasised that India’s mindset is to maintain the same attacking rhythm, even if the team loses early wickets.
“We are just looking for this. We are just looking as an individual—I would not say as an individual—we are looking for runs as a team,” Tilak Varma explained. “We also discussed that whatever the situation is, even if we lose three or four wickets in the powerplay, we still bat with the same rhythm,” he added, underlining the team’s commitment to an aggressive brand of T20 cricket.

Tilak also credited Sanju Samson for setting the tone at the top of the order. Samson, who replaced Rinku Singh in the playing XI, played a brisk cameo of 24 from 15 balls. His quick start helped India build a 48-run opening partnership with Abhishek Sharma inside just 3.4 overs.

“It’s important when openers give a good start because it gives confidence to the batters coming at number three, four and five,” Tilak Varma said. “That’s what Sanju started brilliantly. We want opposition bowlers to feel that pressure—that Indian batters are ready to hit every ball,” he added.
The young left-hander also reflected on India’s earlier setback against the South Africa national cricket team in their Super 8 opener. According to Tilak, the team analysed footage from their successful T20 performances over the past year to regain confidence before the Chepauk clash.

“As we discussed before the game, we wanted to go with a positive mindset. We watched how we played our T20 cricket over the past year, and that gave everyone confidence,” he said. Tilak Varma further revealed that head coach Gautam Gambhir played a key role in reinforcing that philosophy. “Gautam sir reminded us of the brand of cricket we have played since last year and in the New Zealand and South Africa series at home. His message was simple—whatever the situation, go out there, enjoy the game and keep smiling.”
