Tilak Varma believes that sharing the dressing room with Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli has transformed his confidence as he continues to shape his journey in international cricket. The 23-year-old, who has played four ODIs and already notched up a half-century, feels naturally aligned with the longer formats and is determined to maximise his chances during the ongoing South Africa tour.

“ODI and Test cricket feel like my game because I enjoy the longer format. I’m really excited to play more ODIs. When Rohit bhai and Virat bhai are in the same team, the confidence level is completely different,” Tilak Varma said on JioStar.
For the young left-hander, simply being around two of India’s biggest modern-day icons has been a priceless education. Their insights, experience, and clarity, he said, have shaped his understanding of what it truly takes to succeed at the highest level.

“They have so much knowledge, and I try to take as much advice from them as possible,” Tilak Varma added, acknowledging how these conversations have helped him adapt to the demands of international cricket.
A key part of his development has come from in-depth chats with Virat Kohli, particularly on fitness, intensity, and running between the wickets — areas Varma feels are crucial for longevity in ODIs and Tests.

“I speak to Virat bhai a lot, especially about fitness and running between the wickets. His intensity is incredible. I really enjoy that part of the game too,” he said. Kohli’s focus on quick singles, maintaining rhythm, and controlling the middle overs has already influenced Varma’s batting style.
Tilak Varma is also eager for more opportunities to share the crease with Kohli. “If we play together, running between the wickets with him is something I look forward to,” he said.

With India continuing to rotate their squad and test their bench strength, Varma understands the value of every innings. “Whatever opportunities I get against South Africa, I want to finish games. I want to prove myself in ODIs and Tests. I’m challenging myself to grow in the longer formats and improve as a player,” he added, reflecting the hunger and maturity that define his early international career.
